Is it a Boxer dog that you’re really keen on? Well, Boxers are a pawticularly pup-ular large dog breed on BorrowMyDoggy. Whether you’re thinking of borrowing one or getting your own, we’ve pulled together lots of fun dog facts you should know about the breed.
What is a Boxer?
Originally from Germany, the Boxer is a big dog with the personality to match. Described by The Kennel Club as “truly a delightful breed”, Boxers are fun-loving and energetic. The name Boxer is thought to derive from the dog’s tendency to stand on its hind legs and box with its paws! These dogs are famously great with children so make fantastic family dogs.
How much exercise does a Boxer need?
In short - a lot! It is recommended that they get more than 2 hours of exercise per day, so you’ll need a lot of stamina to keep up. The Kennel Club says that “devotees of the Boxer need to be fit to stand up to their charges; a gentle, meek Boxer does not exist.”
“Remus lives up to the boxer name - he is mad! Very high energy and would love to run and play all day if he could. He gets on with other dogs and absolutely loves kids. He just wants to play!” Gemma, Owner of Remus
What is the temperament of a Boxer?
Historically, Boxers were bred to be guard dogs, as well as search and rescue dogs so they are loyal and highly intelligent. As previously mentioned, they are great family dogs thanks to their fun and happy demeanour, not least their boundless energy.
“Poppy is full of personality and always willing to please. She loves cuddles and attention. She is a friendly and energetic girl who loves everybody! She gets on fantastically with other dogs of all shapes and sizes.” Aimee, Owner of Poppy
Are Boxers easy to train?
Boxers have a tendency to be a little stubborn at times, but with the right attitude and commitment you can train them to be the best they can be, which is brilliant! They do jump up quite a bit, so make sure to spend time trying to get this under control - see our top tip how to do this further down the page.
Owner Marcio on his Boxer, Lolla
"She has been well trained by us and indoors she is usually very very calm and sleeps 80% of the day. A certain level of self confidence and assertiveness is highly required for her to respect you as a pack leader."
That being said, here are a few funny quirks that some of our members’ pooches have:
Owner Danielle on her Boxer, Rosie
“Rosie is a lover of luxury with a stately and unladylike slumbering snore.”
Owner Helen on her, Boxer, Bruno
"Despite his size, Bruno can be a bit of a wimp – he doesn’t seem to like water (but will tolerate a bath/shower)."
