What is a Miniature Schnauzer?

The Miniature Schnauzer is a small terrier that derives from the Schnauzer and the Affenpinscher. They have a wiry coat and come in three different colours - pepper and salt, black, black and silver and white, with their eyebrows and whiskers providing distinctive features. Their coats are sometimes thought to be non-moulting - while this isn’t true, they are low shedding dogs and their shedding is generally unnoticeable.

In short, small and cute dogs don’t get much better than this.

How much exercise does a Miniature Schnauzer need?

With Schnauzers originally being used as working dogs, the Miniature Schnauzer has fairly high energy levels and requires at least an hour of exercise every day, according to The Kennel Club. They could be classed as a lap dog breed but will need a good run around before sitting down to enjoy a good book with you.

“Felix is a typical Miniature Schnauzer - he’s very affectionate, loves children, is keen to play, loves to sniff when out on a walk, and can sometimes be a bit suspicious of other dogs but once he's met them properly, he's friendly and more than happy to play.” - Sophie, Owner of Felix.

Are Miniature Schnauzers easy to train?

Although the Miniature Schnauzer is relatively easy to train, this has to be done from a very early age to ensure they know who is boss. They tend to be playful dogs so might be cheeky if they don’t get enough exercise. Consistency is key when training them.

“Maisie is so well behaved she is a Therapet. She goes into the local psychiatric hospitals most challenging wards, for dementia and head injuries, and meets the patient's.” - Hazel, Owner of Maisie.

That being said, here are a few funny quirks that some of our members’ pooches have:
