What is a Boston Terrier?

The ancestry of these little dogs can be traced back to the British Bulldog and a mix of terrier and bull type dogs. They originate from the US and were bred to be a companion dog. They are a small dog breed and their coats are either brindle, black and white or brown and white - many sources claim black and white Bostons looks like they’re wearing tuxedos so are ready for every black tie occasion.

How much exercise does a Boston Terrier need?

Boston Terriers tend to be fairly even-tempered and are a very happy house dog. They require up to an hour of exercise a day according to The Kennel Club, but like many different kinds of dog, they are adaptable and may enjoy longer excursions with their owners or borrowers. The Boston Terrier prefers exercising in company and (perhaps surprisingly) excel at dog agility and other doggy sports - so remember to take a ball if you’re walking one of these guys.

What is the temperament of a Boston Terrier?

Boston Terriers are very popular with first time dog owners and are a particularly good breed for city living. They are often described as being charming and dapper dogs, and can be very eye-catching which gets them lots of attention when out and about. They are an intelligent breed whose two main passions are often playing games and chasing balls.

Are Boston Terrier’s easy to train?

Due to being a Terrier, the Boston Terrier can sometimes be difficult to train due to their stubbornness. Consistency is key when training Boston Terriers, and owners are often recommended to try crate training with them, allowing up to 6 months of commitment before they are fully trained.

“Poppy & Pickle are so well behaved - they were crate trained from day one.” - Erin, Owner of Poppy & Pickle.

That being said, here are a few funny quirks that some of our members’ pooches have:

Lily, Owner of Ralphie:

“Ralphie Dislikes wind, rain, being woken up, not being allowed to eat human food and going to the vet.”

Nerys, Owner of Darcy:

“Darcy loves other dogs, and will always roll up onto her back legs in the air when she meets them.”

Em, Owner of Luna:

“Sometimes Luna goes into kennels, but she reckons that there's a higher chance of extra treats when she is dog-sat by someone.”
