Hungarian Vizsla

Fun facts about Hungarian Vizslas from the BorrowMyDoggy community

Loyal, affectionate and regal, the Hungarian Vizsla can make a perfect family dog for an active family, and will never get bored of trying to please you. Whether you’re thinking of borrowing one or getting your own, we’ve pulled together lots of fun and interesting facts you should know about the breed, courtesy of the Hungarian Vizsla owners in our community.

What is a Hungarian Vizsla?

The Hungarian Vizsla is a hunting dog, originally from Hungary. They are agile, sport dogs, and are the smallest of the Pointer-Retriever breeds. Their typical colour is a solid golden-rust, which comes in slightly different shades. The wirehaired Vizsla has become increasingly popular recently.

How much exercise does a Hungarian Vizsla need?

The Vizsla is an active dog, and The Kennel Club advises that they’re exercised for more than two hours a day. They thrive off exercise and require lots to remain happy and healthy. They are keen swimmers, another great source of exercise for them.

“Harry is very energetic and requires lots of exercise. He has a 40 minute walk 2-3 times a day, plus lots of games of fetch.” - Charlotte, owner of Harry.

What is the temperament of a Hungarian Vizsla?

Loyal, affectionate, noble and gentle are just some of the ways a Vizsla is described. They have a strong desire to be with people and can often become destructive if left alone for long periods of time. They’re nicknamed ‘the velcro dog’ because they love to be nearby at all times.

“Maggie lives up to the breed’s name of ‘the velcro dog.’ She loves to be with people all the time and if she gets a cuddle, that’s an added bonus.” - Cordelia, owner of Maggie.

Are Hungarian Vizslas easy to train?

Vizslas have an above-average learning ability and a strong desire to please, so with early, consistent training, you can have a biddable, well-mannered dog. They enjoy training sessions, and as long as the owner displays authority, the Vizsla will happily oblige.

“India is very intelligent, sometimes too much for her own good! She’s very eager to please and will do anything you ask.” - Olivia, owner of India.

That being said, here are a few funny quirks that some of our members’ Hungarian Vizslas have:

Lee, owner of Benson

“Benson has been trained to ring a bell by the door when he needs to go out.”

Sharon, owner of Brinkley

“No matter where he is in the house, Brinkley appears in seconds if he smells someone toasting a bagel.”

Christy, owner of Amber

“Amber is a bit of a “roller”, and needs to be kept on the lead if you’re walking anywhere near manure.”

BorrowMyDoggy member Kerry joined with her Hungarian Vizsla, Stanley. As she shares, “I signed up because I was pregnant and knew that I needed a bit of help with such an active dog, in what could have been a very stressful time with a new baby. We’re very lucky with our match.”
