Paddle Boarding With Your Pooch

5 June 2025

Ever thought about paddle boarding with a dog? It’s an ideal pastime for well-behaved dogs with good recall training, who can handle the water. And it’s a wonderful sport for summer, so long as you take the right precautions - after all, not all dogs can swim, so ensuring they can is the first step!

Preparation for SUP

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) can be a great outdoor activity and bonding experience for you and your pooch. But we want to make sure your adventure is safe and rewarding. Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, it’s important to invest in a well fitting canine life jacket, ideally with handles, so you can rescue them if needed.

Ensure claws are recently trimmed, and don’t leash your dog to the board as this can be dangerous. Wide, stable and textured boards are ideal, and inflatable boards can be a comfortable option for good grip. Before you step paw on the board, ensure your dog is good and worn out, so they can relax on the water.

Preparing for Paddle Boarding

Pack your bag first - along with extras like a first aid kit and doggy sunscreen. Bring water to avoid consumption of salty sea water or unsafe, algae contaminated lake water. Plus a well stocked, waterproof treat bag can help things along!

Start by getting your pooch used to the board on dry land first, reinforcing positive commands with rewards and praise. And start with short trips in shallow water, where your four-legged friend and jump ashore if needed. Rivers and lakes may be a less daunting place to start. And on your first proper trip, it may be easier to guide the board in backward, to avoid the dog capsizing or damaging the fin. And be prepared to fall in!

Paddle Board Clubs

There are many clubs and services where you can learn to paddleboard with your dog safely and under supervision. This allows you to hire a board if you’re not sure, and learn from others.
