Walking our furry friends is such an important part of dog ownership. If you’re borrowing a dog, you might not know the best places to go, so we hope to inspire you with these five local wagtastic walking spots for you and your doggy, borrowed or owned, in Oxford.

Shotover Country Park

Described by the council as a “hillside of hidden valleys, sudden views and varied habitats”, Shotover Country Park is situated on the eastern fringes of Oxford. It features almost 300 acres of land and spectacular views across South Oxfordshire.

There are three trails to guide you through the park. They all start in Mary Sadler’s Field near the car park. They range from 30 mins to 2 hours so you can choose one depending on how energetic you and your dog are feeling!

Port Meadow

440 acres of land make Port Meadow the largest area of common land in Oxford. It borders the River Thames and is just a short walk away from the city centre. According the The Oxford Guide, a classic Oxford activity is to walk up the west side of the Meadow and have a pint at the Perch - we’ve checked and there is lots of lovely outdoor space for you and your dog to chill out in!

The meadow is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is very popular with birders, as the council says “Port Meadow is a magnet for migrating birds.”

South Park

In the east of the city you’ll find South Park (don’t let the name fool you!) South Park is famous for its spectacular views over Oxford and vast parkland - 50 acres to be specific. The land was privately owned until 1950’s, when it was gifted to the city.

There’s always something to do or see in the park, for both you and your four legged friend. The large open space makes it a prime tennis ball throwing location so be sure to pack one when you visit with your pooch.

Located in the north of the city, Cutteslowe and Sunnymead is the largest park in Oxford. There is lots to keep you and your dog entertained in the 42 hectares of land which has recently been awarded a Green Flag Award - the scheme which recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country.

The park has ornamental flower beds and wild flower areas, as well as a duck pond and community woodland. Between April and October you can even see hot air balloons in flight!

Another Green Flag Award recipient, Florence Park is situated in the east of the city. Avenues of trees throughout the park make it a perfect place to walk your dog. There is also woodland to discover and streams to paddle in should the mood strike!

Last year, the park celebrated its 80th birthday with a range of exciting events. There is always something going on in the park, which is popular with the sportier types thanks to its tennis courts, bowls green and miniature golf course.
