What is a Jack Russell?

Jack Russells are small, happy, lively terriers and pack big personalities into their small frames. They generally weigh between 6.4–8.2 kg and can be smooth or rough-coated.

How much exercise does a Jack Russell need?

As a very energetic breed, Jack Russells require a high level of exercise and stimulation, otherwise they become bored. Their energy and drive make them ideally suited to activities such as flyball or agility.

"Chops walks until your heart’s content, although he’s not fussed about playing fetch as he has more interest in sniffing. In the house, he'd much rather lie in the sunshine and woof at anything if it disturbs his slumber." - Kirsty, owner of Chops

What is the temperament of a Jack Russell?

According to the Jack Russell Club of Great Britain, Jack Russell terriers are highly intelligent and love to be with the pack, so much so that if they are left alone for a long period, the result can be excessive barking and mischievous behaviour. Here is what some of our members had to say about their Jack Russell pals:

"Canto is very friendly (tail-wagging aplenty) and always up to play tug-of-war! Once he's exhausted from fun and games, he loves cuddling on the couch or the bed." - Gaelle, owner of Canto

Are Jack Russells easy to train?

Because of their high energy and intelligence, Jack Russells are quick to learn, but require clear, consistent, ongoing training to stay busy and happy.

Sometimes training can be a bit hit and miss if there are other distractions, such as a ball, pigeons or food. - Nicola, Owner of Archie

That being said, here are a few funny quirks that some of our members’ pooches have:

Owner Allison on her Jack Russell, Connie:

"Window cleaners really wind Connie up and set her off in a barking fit."

Owner Mia on her Jack Russell, Wilson:

"Wilson loves fluffy toys, though he makes quite a mess and nothing fabric lasts long. Anything with fluff inside it will find itself immediately defluffed."
