Can a dog help with loneliness?

8 June 2023

The companionship of our pawsome pooches has been shown to have therapeutic benefits that can help alleviate loneliness.

Over the years, we have had lots of lovely feedback on how dogs have helped on all levels of mental and physical health. We wanted to share a couple of stories on how dogs have helped BorrowMyDoggy members with feelings of loneliness.

Loneliness no more

Loneliness can arise from various circumstances, such as living alone, moving to a new place, or experiencing a loss. Enter our four-legged superheroes! Dogs have an incredible ability to lift our spirits and make us feel like the luckiest humans on the planet. With their wagging tails, wet noses, and slobbery kisses, they offer paw-some emotional support like no other.

The Connection Between Dogs and Humans

Humans and dogs share a special relationship that is rooted in trust, love, and mutual understanding. This bond has developed through centuries of coexistence, where our clever canines have adapted to understand human emotions and provide comforting support.

Our BFFs are pretty incredible creatures, capable of detecting our moods, offering comfort, and providing a source of unconditional love.

How Dogs Help with Loneliness

Companionship and Unconditional Love

Dogs offer companionship like no other. They are always there, eager to spend time with us, listen to our thoughts without judgement, and offer their unconditional love.

Having a pup by your side can alleviate the feeling of being alone, providing a sense of purpose and meaning.

Working from home alone can be so lonely and boring. But with a little puppy pal to play with and get out and about, it's so much better.

Promoting Social Interaction

Taking your four-legged friend for walks is like having your very own icebreaker on a leash. They're conversation starters, attracting attention from passersby and sparking impromptu chats with fellow dog lovers.

Before you know it, you'll be trading stories, sharing doggy advice, and building a community of like-minded dog enthusiasts. Who knew that a simple walk around the block could lead to new friendships and a pack of pals?

I feel like London can be quite a lonely place but I have been amazed at how many people I have met also walking their dogs or they want to say hello to Marvel (he is very cute).

She has changed my life. She's given me a purpose and the motivation to go out several times a week during my lunch break for a short walk with her and at the weekend for longer adventures.

Paws-itive Vibes Only: The Therapeutic Effects of Dogs

Dogs have a special superpower—they're natural stress-busters! Spending time with these furry therapists can do wonders for your mental well-being. Studies have shown that petting a dog can reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, and release a flood of happy hormones. They're the paw-fect antidote to the pressures of everyday life, offering a wagging tail of comfort, support, and endless cuddles when you need them most. It's like having a little ray of sunshine on four paws brightening up even the cloudiest of days!

I joined BorrowMyDoggy as I have had to give up work to care for my parents which has become quite isolating for me as I don’t get to socialise much as my free time is very much dependent on their health. I have met a few lovely dogs and their owners now and it has given me an outlet where I can go out and socialise with other dog walkers and get all the doggy cuddles.

Increasing Physical Activity

Regular walks, playtime, and outdoor adventures with a pup can help us add physical activity into our daily routine. Did you know that this physical activity with our furry friends can lead to a serious case of endorphin overload? It's true!

The more you move and play with your pup, the more those feel-good hormones start to flood your system. Endorphins are like little balls of happiness, bringing an instant mood boost and an overall sense of well-being.

Murphy has given me something to look forward to everyday, and I am happier and healthier (from lots of play time with Murphy!) and much less lonely.
