What is a Golden Retriever?

Golden Retrievers are extremely happy dogs. A healthy full grown Golden Retriever is usually 51 - 61cm tall and can weigh up to 34kg - the males are usually bigger than the females. Their intelligence and versatility make them well suited to be assistance dogs and according to the Golden Retriever Club of Great Britain, they’re a fun-loving family addition because they’re patient and good with children.

These golden dogs have two coats that protect them in summer and winter, are good for swimming and, in terms of colour, range from light blond to dark gold. You may hear these dogs referred to in different ways, usually with reference to the shade of their coat - the yellow retriever is a common example. Dogs with the darkest shade of gold are sometimes called red Golden Retrievers and resemble the bigger, lankier (but very beautiful) Irish Setter. Some breeders produce white Golden Retrievers but traditionally the breed is limited to different shades of gold. Their coat will need brushing, ideally daily, but should not be shaved or clipped.

The Flat Coated Retriever could easily be mistaken for a Golden Retriever and have similar personalities but can be distinguished by the black or brown coats. The miniature Golden Retriever is not yet recognised as an official breed as it is too new. It is a Golden Retriever crossed with smaller breeds. The mix of breeds will depend on the breeder but generally seems to be a multi-generational cross of Cocker Spaniels, Poodles and sometimes Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.

Golden Retriever health

There are sadly some common health problems found in purebred Golden Retrievers. Cancer and hip dysplasia are common ailments, amongst others, and so regular check ups with the vet are important. If you’re looking around for where to get a Golden Retriever or Golden Retriever adoption, bear in mind these health issues and the financial implications they could have in the future. Reputable Golden Retriever breeders often screen puppies for disorders before selling them so this can be a helpful way to ensure you get a healthy dog.

How much exercise does a Golden Retriever need?

As the name suggests, Golden Retrievers were originally bred as hunting dogs and continue to enjoy a good game of fetch or swim and need a couple of hours of walks and exercise each day. It is now much more common for people to keep Golden Retrievers as a pet.

"You can't exercise Barney enough. He just loves going out on his walks, exploring new places and also really likes swimming. He's got lots of lovely energy throughout the day." - Sarah, Owner of Barney

What is the temperament of a Golden Retriever?

Golden Retriever dogs are known for their friendly, trusting and gentle disposition. Here is what some of our members had to say about their Golden Retriever pals:

"Henry is a real softie and is very gentle with children. He loves being cuddled on the sofa and gets excited about going on walks and meeting other dogs." - Hannah, Owner of Henry

Are Golden Retrievers easy to train?

Golden Retrievers are very intelligent and have a strong desire to please, which makes them easy to train. Golden Retriever puppies are eager to learn but will still require training - puppy training classes are usually easy to find and can be a good way for both owner and puppy to learn :)

Cuca on her Golden Retriever, Oly:

Oly loves cuddles and will sit on your lap or share a sofa with you but only if invited - he is quite polite like that.

Here are a few funny quirks that some of our members’ pooches have:

Owner Hazel on her Golden Retriever, Honey:

She cant have enough petting and has a good nudge to remind you if you stop stroking!

Owner Stephen on her Golden Retriever, Milo:

Milo is a typical Golden Retriever as he thinks everyone just wants to play like him.

Researching Golden Retriever information before borrowing, buying or rescuing a Retriever is a great way to ensure training goes well and you have the best pawsible time together :)
